Volunteers are the essential glue that holds the mission of Hope House together. Our volunteers provide personal skills and talents as well as a dedication, commitment and support to the residents. Currently, we have a wonderful band of over 200 volunteers in our database including specially trained Resident Advisor volunteers from the RAYS of Hope Program. Volunteer applications may be downloaded for both our regular volunteers and our RAYS volunteers. Background checks will be conducted on all volunteers who plans to work within the house one-on-one with residents.
The financial ‘in-kind’ contribution of renovating Hope House and furnishing the house is estimated at over $500,000. Our volunteers during the building and furnishing of the house have contributed time and resources in the following ways:
- Monitoring the house as a trained resident advisor in the RAYS Program
- Building and Maintenance (general contractors, interior designers, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters) services
- Housekeeping and interior design
- Office administration
- Fundraising and Event Management
Areas of volunteer expertise that are needed on an ongoing basis now that the house is fully occupied includes:
Garden Angels:
If you like to work outside on a variety of gardening projects on the four acres of Hope House on a regular basis or special services days, we can use your time and talent. Ginny Wiese heads up this effort for Hope House. You can reach her at (704-987-3224) and she will get you involved on the gardening team.
Special Person Volunteer:
The “special person” adopts a resident or a family and becomes a special friend and mentor who celebrates the residents as special individuals in their lives by remembering their birthdays and the holidays by providing personal needs that the family may have such as school supplies or clothing.
Pantry Sponsor:
Hope House seeks to provide over 50 percent of the food needs within the house. “Pantry sponsor” volunteers are always sought who pledge to hold food drives or to support the Hope House Need's List on either a monthly or quarterly basis. This volunteer effort is excellent for an organization to adopt.
Workday Sponsor:
“Workday sponsors” schedule a project at Hope House to work side-by-side with Hope House staff and families. These projects enable Hope House to maintain a clean and functional facility at a low cost. Again, this type of volunteer activity is excellent for a group to undertake.
Budget Counselor:
Budget counselors help a family learn to set and prioritize financial goals and to distinguish needs from wants in their lives providing prudent methods and procedures for managing money and resources.
Life Skills Instructor/Counselor:
Life skills instructors and counselors provided guidance through classes that focus on issues such as nutrition, parenting, home health care, stress management, personal safety, employment skills and auto care.
Children’s Mentors and Helpers:
Responsible adults are needed to help the children with homework or to entertain the young children when their parents must go to an appointment. Reading is emphasized over television watching in the house and help with using the public library system is encouraged.
RAYS of Hope Trained Volunteer
Hope House must be staffed 24/7 and RAYS trained volunteers come into Hope House to help at specific times during the evening and weekends as well as during the day to support the staff. This special volunteer program is called RAYS of Hope for “Resident Advisors at Your Service.” RAYS volunteers report to the house on their scheduled days and times, provide general support and guidance for the residents, as well as see to it that the Hope House’s rules and regulations are properly observed. A RAYS Volunteer must be responsible woman, age 21 or older, who will commit to volunteer for a minimum of 5 hours at least twice per month. While not required, we also encourage volunteer resident advisors to share their special skills, hobbies, or interests during their time at the home. Above all, our RAYS volunteers have a heart for serving others with the ability to provide motivation, inspiration, and “hope” to those who greatly need it. All RAYS volunteers must participate in a 2-Hr formal training program and undergo a general background check. For more information on becoming a RAYS volunteer, contact Val Daye, Program Director at valforhopehouse@aol.com or call Val at (704) 724-3017.
